Symptoms of Swimmers' Ear

If you develop swimmers’ ear, you will likely start noticing symptoms within a few days. These symptoms may start out mild at first but can worsen if the infection is not properly treated. Common symptoms associated with swimmers’ ear include:

  • Itchiness of the ear canal
  • Ear pain or discomfort, which may become worse when you tug or pull on the outer ear
  • Drainage from the ear
  • Redness inside the ear

In advanced cases of swimmers’ ear, symptoms may include severe pain; swelling in the lymph nodes of the neck; fever; or complete blockage of the ear canal.

If you experience any symptoms of swimmers’ ear—even if these symptoms are only mild—be sure to talk with your doctor.
